No need for $PATH, just: # first backup the old one from the package: sudo mv /usr/share/applications/darktable.desktop /root/darktable.desktop # then replace it: sudo mv /opt/darktable/share/applications/darktable.desktop /usr/share/applications/darktable.desktop Do note that such a replacement gets wiped after the package is updated.
