I think this is the main point. It's not only Lab it's those
up to 14 channels. Of course you're right that in ab you've
a lot happening in a pretty close range.

I imagined small eg. tabs could do the trick. I admit that I
even like the decompose idea of Gimp. (Admitting, that
before they broke it, I was a big fan of Gimps multi window
mode.) Gimps channel palette where one could just switch the
visiblity of channels like layers would be anohter idea.
