My wild guess, based on experience with any CPU intensive work, is:

The 300MHz / 175$ is wasted clock-per-cash, since you can expect a 12,5%
performance increase at the very very very unrealistic best. The real
speedup is probably below 1%.

The larger cache of the big one could really make a notable difference.
The faster speed is only a nice extra.
Even the slowest cache on the CPU (L3) can be accessed so much faster
than RAM (roughly factor 10, I think), that CPUs tend to be waiting for
"ages" for new data to arrive.
Modern CPUs already have fancy prediction algorithms, though, to read
data from RAM long before it might actually be needed. Larger caches
simply increase the probability that the next required bunch of data is
already pre-cached, so they can be accessed much faster.

If you are in the position that 369$ wouldn't bother you much longer
than a month (I'm not...), I would recommend the 3840QM. I would
never-ever go for the 3740QM.
