tks, that reduced the library.db size by 9mb but made no differenct to the
noted problem.

I will watch closely future imports.  Our High School soccer season ended
yesterday and my large imports will not occur for another 5 weeks when our
first club soccer match is scheduled.  And I can import a directory of
individual images rather than the directory/folder as such, so I am not
broken :^).
