I have no experience with open source drivers. AFAIK they do not support OpenCL on those devices yet - and if they do they probably fall short in terms of performance. Looking at general system stability NVIDIA was clearly ahead of AMD in the past. In fact when I switched to the HD7950 I experienced several graphical glitches and minor problems (some windows appear black for a short period of time when opening; after some time of activity no new application could be opened unless you would restart X11). The recent AMD drivers (I am running Catalyst 13.20.5 now) seem to have overcome these issues. So currently I am really happy with my decision.
