After a little bit of investigating, the user manual states :
A polarity button allows the user to toggle between the normal and the
> inverted state of the drawn mask, i.e. the opacity values get inverted -
> 100% becomes 0% and vice versa. You need this feature when combining drawn
> and parametric masks (see combined_masks).

This is what it does :
Step 2 : Opacity of the circle is 60%. Opacity outside the circle is 0%
Step 3 : Opacity of the circle is 40%. Opacity outside the circle is 100%
Step 4 : The drawn mask is the circle so we are modifying the circle
opacity.
The behavior is the same as stated in the manual,
