Yepp, that's the intended behavior. The *polarity* button acts on the 
full drawn mask with all shapes you have defined in that mask.

If you want the option to invert a single shape you can only do so in 
the mask manager. Open the corresponding group and right-click on the 
desired shape then select "use inverted shape". This time if you do 
control-scroll the opacity of the outside area is modified whereas the 
area inside the shape is kept at an opacity value of zero.
