just to add to this so that it doesn't sound like i'm bashing g'mic, which
i'm not, it's awesome :)

the mapping inside the cube is mostly smooth, so downsampling it and then
using it with some interpolation doesn't really hurt as much as you might
think. it's still better to see the actual adjustments made to achieve that
look, in my opinion. at least i already learned a lot by watching the
optimizer find parameters for color zones and tonecurve to achieve a
certain look.
