Sorry for the delay in replying, like I said, I'm on the road ATM.

Yes, I did try the colour zones module but that didn't darken that particular 
patch of sky sufficiently.

I had thought of a drawn mask but I thought that that would leave, what I 
erroneously called, "banding". I had forgotten about the feathering (if that 
is the right term) option available for the mask. Thanks to Ulrich for 
pointing that out via an example - very much appreciated.
