IMHO it would be great if one could come to some import/export-tool for
reuse of the host of vocabularies that are available for <these other
commercial tools>. Besides, there are quite some interesting
vocabularies available these days for free. E.g. the Library of Congress
released their vocabulary some time ago.

Its not that hard to fiddle out how to fill them to the database. When I
started to work on some (back then perlish) tool to add my keywords to
dt via the simple sql however, I came across this tagxtag-stuff that
didn't work to well for me, when I just added the keywords/chains. The
import via xmp worked better as it filled the tagxtag stuff with more
reasonable values. As mentioned the LUA stuff now available might give a
cleaner interface, however, and maybe even solves the problems I faced
back then.

BTW: Parsing the list files input isn't that difficult. One could even
think of making life for users easy by just supporting it natively in dt...

To really reuse the vocabularies you mentioned, there are some
functionalities in dt missing at the moment. E.g. handling of synonyms
in search that result in only the key term added. Or the addition of
several descriptors if one is chosen. (E.g. one might add a common name
of a species and have the vocabulary also assign the scientific name or
the name in another language.) Of course in a first incarnation one
could just ignore these issues, however in the end these are IMHO
valuable results that come for free from usage of general vocabularies.

Anyway, IMHO a greater difficulty right now stems from an interface
point of view. Working with general vocabularies one easily ends up with
several thousand keywords and possibly their hierarchies. The mentioned
LoC vocabulary contains nearly 400.000 descriptors and also vocabularies
like anmimals or plants "are a bit larger". Even a simple, amateurs
fauna and flora of say Germany contains ~2000 species.

Here the current GUI doesn't scale well, IMHO. Even in my simple,
homebrewn list (which is a lot smaler as it only contains things I
needed, not things a bunch of people require as you have it with general
vocabularies) I get quite longish fly out menues, in fact so long that
they don't fit the screen any more. This gets even worse as I'd need to
model some other entities (city, sublocation, state, country...) via
keyword chains.
