I've only skim-read the article, but it seems to me you're looking for white 
balance, although afaik this only does
linear transforms.  There are a bunch of presets or you could use the spot 
white balance feature that will work off
(non-clipped) white or neutral grey even if it's approaching black.  That ought 
to get you started, at least.  You could
