Thanks, I should have probably made it clearer that I was using the
UNSTABLE version from the unstable ppa. I can't go back to
1.4.2-1build2 because of the database changes.

version the simplest thing is to do a "sudo apt-get build-dep
darktable" first.
Regarding the darktable
being available in Ubuntu: I'm using 14.10 Utopic and
darktable is available, version 1.4.2-1build2. Do you have all
your repositories enabled?
Perhaps it's in
Universe?
I recommend doing "sudo
apt-get install -f" before you try anything else.
