When I run

cd /opt/darktable/bin/
./darktable

I get the following:

rob-carly@rob-carly-P5KR:/opt/darktable/bin$ ./darktable
[init] the database lock file contains a pid that seems to be alive in 
your system: 2721
[init] database is locked, probably another process is already using it
