I tend to like a (very) rough drawn mask with wide fuzzy edge so that I can match it easily to hill shapes etc rather than a simple grad line. This also lets you use your module of choice for the darkening rather than being constrained to the grad. Of these the zone (or any sort of curve) module seems particularly appropriate as you can very flexibly control sky and cloud contrast without needing the separate parametric mask (although that too can indeed be useful).
Usually I find I want to do different colour or sharpening or denoise or shadow ops on sky and background as well so having the drawn mask done and usable for any other selective ops is more than handy and I don't mind the few seconds it takes to create one.
