This obviously makes the workflow much simpler but still unnecessarily awkward and -- most importantly -- unintuitive in my opinion. Maybe I have a too strong hacking background, but I consider image groups like a directory: If I remove a directory in the file explorer, all of its contents is removed with it. Similarly for color labels and metadata. Besides, making exceptions makes the whole concept more complicated for the user. Maybe your concerns can be addressed by making groups more obvious, at least when selected. If groups are collapsed and selected, they may be yellowish instead of light grey. Furthermore, the file type watermark should be removed. (Maybe they even should be yellowish always -- the small "G" is easy to miss.)
