We did this on AIX under DB2 Version 6.1.  Our Systems Administrator
created the UNIX instance owner and the fenced id with smit.  He
then ran the db2icrt command using the instance owner and fenced id, he
had just created.  One of the DBAs, then logged in as the new instance
owner and did the db2start.  It was easier to log in than do an
attach and get the instance environment variable correct.  You also
avoid most UNIX permission problems, if you are the instance owner.

I don't remember seeing any documentation on the above procedure, we
had just heard that it worked and we tried it.
