I think a lot of projects call this a "bounty", rather than a sponsorship. If it's labeled in that manner, then people may find it if they're looking for it. Just my two pence, and I personally think it's a great idea, as we've offered bounties on features that we're looking for in software when we're too lazy or overburdened to write them ourselves.
