I never did any appends, but fetch definitely. If you can get a few
thousand messages into a folder, just fetch all of them via a script or
mail client, and watch the child imapd process suck up memory. I was
having Thunderbird run its junkmail controls on the folder, which makes
it fetch all the messages.
The pop daemon seems fine, btw.
