What make version are you using?? Make sure you're really using GNU make.
what does 'make -v' tell you?

I keep getting this after i try to upgrade my FreeBSD port version with
a (march 26) daily snapshot. ./configure --with-mysql finishes ok but
when i do a make i get the error below.
