I have attempted to do this within dbma by setting the default domain to the domain I am adding users to, then adding a user as a complete email address "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" and I get the following error when I click add
user: "RFC-Illegal email address for: [EMAIL PROTECTED]@domain.com"
The account is created, but no mail boxes are created.

dbma is not part of dbmail itself. It is a tool created for dbmail.

It would seem that the @ cannot be used in the user name.

So it might seem, but since we use this setup it is possible. Try it with dbmail-users script.

I guess what I am trying to achieve is to have the user login with their
alias. As far as I am aware this cannot be done.

You can't login with an alias, because a given user can have multiple aliases, however you can set
userid = aliasX for every user by defining them with dbmail-users.
