Someone back in the netscape days decided to call that 'compact folders' for
mozilla/thunderbird. It's below the 'File' menu. Totally lame imo, since no-one
else in the industry calls it that.
If you know of a feature like that for thunderbird, let me know. Otherwise
messages don't go away until you run the dbmail-util utility.
