I understand that anyone, whether or not he/she is a list subscriber, can directly post to the list. Which is why deadlists gets hit by a lot of spam...
I don't know whether this is possible with the server that runs this list, but it would already help a lot if it could be set so that only list subscribers could post to this list. Posts from non-subscribers* could be monitored (I'd volunteer to do this) to filter out the spam.
