This was a benefit for the Black Man's (or Blackman's) Free Store. Richie Havens was also on the bill. There's an image of a ticket for the show at http://gdposters.bravepages.com/1960s/19680619.html The artist of the ticket, Ovid P. Adams, also wrote a comic about Eldridge Cleaver, leader of the Black Panthers. So it was an event due to whatever connections the Dead had with the Panthers. Iver
