Both Dennis McNally and Rock Scully mention the Grateful Dead playing Los Angeles on the Friday night before Monterey Pop.  The Monterey Pop Festival was Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 16, 17 and 18, 1967, so that would mean the Dead played Los Angeles on Friday June 16.

Quotes

"My biggest mistake is booking the Dead into a club in L.A. the night before they are to play Monterey.  And to make things (much) worse, Jerry's guitar gets stolen, so I end up with a demoralized Garcia and an exhausted band.  Plus we are all ragged since we just got back from New York. But we're hungry, and we're not even sure we're going to do Monterey, so we book another date just to be sure to make some money that weekend."

Scully does horribly mangle the entire chronology of the festival, however, and has the Dead playing on Saturday instead of Sunday. Dennis McNally writes

"The Dead had played on Friday night in Los Angeles, where Phil's bass was stolen.  They flew up Saturday morning and enjoyed meeting Ravi Shankar at the airport, then scattered around the fairgrounds to pass the day before their performance on Sunday night."

I dont have any evidence as to what the venue was.  The most likely venue would seem to be The Cheetah in Santa Monica.  The Dead had played there before, and it was one of the few LA venues booking "underground" bands at the time.
