OK, slowly finding the detailed information I need.
I still have lots to learn and understand.

reading /deal.II/deal.II/include/fe/fe_values.h

am I correct in reading shape_hessian is now
shape_2nd_derivative ?

There was an "etc." above in the comments, yet
I do not see
shape_3rd_derivative
shape_4th_derivative

These are what I was looking for in my previous post.

For example, the three dimensional beam problem has
fourth derivatives in the PDE in all dimensions.

If I was 50 years younger, I would consider investing
the time to extend deal.II to four dimensions, x,y,z,t

deal.II is a significant accomplishment.
A very powerful PDE tool kit.
I have a long way to go to learn the "deal.II diction" as you say,
and I have to understand the "abstractions" in order to use them.
