Jon, you are, of course, entitled to like or dislike aspects of the design of deal.II. I would, however, request that out of general fairness (i) you leave the evaluation of whether this design is actually useful to those who use the library in their daily work, (ii) not judge us on the constraints journals impose on the formatting of sample code, (iii) go read our documentation -- you may not like doxygen, but we try very very hard (and spend a quite significant amount of time) documenting deal.II.
