BANGLADESH:

One gets death penalty for killing his wife

A court here has convicted a man and sentenced him to death for killing
his wife for dowry in 2003. Convict Nurunnabi (30), son of late Helal
Uddin, of Shyampur Miapara in Shibganj Upazila of Chapainawabganj district
was also fined Tk 0.1 million (one lakh). The court ordered payment of the
money to the victim's parents. According to the prosecution, Nurunnabi
married Farhana Yesmin alias Jolly 3 years back and took a motorcycle and
gold ornaments from her parents as dowry. Nurunnabi later used to torture
Jolly to bring more money as dowry from her parents. On June 6, 2003, he
on her refusal to bring the demanded money poured kerosene on her body and
set her afire. She died on the spot. A case was filed with the Rajshahi
Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal against Nurunnabi, his mother and two
brothers. After examining the records and witness, Tribunal Judge AFM
Aminul Islam handed down the verdict Thursday acquitting others.
