College student killer executed
Ma Jiajue, a college student who was sentenced to death for killing 4 of
his classmates in Yunnan University, was executed in southwest China's
Yunnan Province Thursday morning.
The execution was conducted in compliance with the verdict of the
Intermediate People's Court of Kunming.
Ma, 22, from the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, killed 4 classmates in
Yunnan University from Feb. 13 to 15, 2004.
The bodies of the 4 victims were found in a dormitory in the university on
Feb. 23, all with deadly injures consistent with a blunt metal object.
Ma was captured on March 15 in south China's island province of Hainan and
was sent back to Yunnan 2 days later.
The Kunming Intermediate People's Court sentenced Ma to death and deprived
his political right for life on April 24.
The Yunnan Provincial Higher People's Court approved the verdict of the
Kunming Intermediate People's Court recently.

Students voice support for execution of campus killer
Many college students in southwest China's Yunnan province say they have
finally gone out of the shadow of fear after hearing the news that student
slayer Ma Jiajue was executed Thursday morning.
Many students of Yunnan University said Ma deserved his due punishment and
the 4 classmates Ma had killed can rest in peace. Nevertheless, some
students felt compassion for his parents.
A girl student at the Economics College of Yunnan University said, "I
should tell the news to my mother at once, because she had her heart in
her mouth all day long since Ma slayed his classmates. She didn't allow me
to leave home in the evening. If I were alone in the dormitory, she urged
me to go home."
Li Bin from the Kunming University of Science and Engineering said that he
had experienced similar mental pressure from the caseof Ma Jiajue and
suggested that the college educational system should be reformed.
Lu Aishu, a teacher of the Yunnan Normal University, said educational
departments should make improvements in 3 aspects.
First of all, classes on psychological tutorship should be added to
curriculum from the middle school. Secondly, people should takeproper care
of students from outlying, needy areas. Thirdly, everyone should be taught
to be kind-hearted to others.
Zhang Shaohong, an official of the Yunnan Provincial Educational
Department, noted that all institutes of higher learning should draw
lessons from Ma's case. There are a host of hidden troubles and
universities and colleges should pay attentionto psychological education,
Zhang said.
Luo Yang from the Yunnan Education News said that though Ma had been
executed, people still not feel relieved. They worry about whether a
similar man-slayer will appear.
Luo appealed for more social care for young people and for a good
environment for their growth.
