INDONESIA:

Indonesian chief justice supports death penalty for drugs convicts

Chairman of the Indonesian Supreme Court Bagir Manan on Saturday expressed
his support to the imposition of death penalty for drugs convicts, saying
that not only the people but also law enforcers especially judges had all
hoped for the imposition of the penalty for the convicts.

"The imposition of death penalty for drugs convicts is not a mere wish but
also a message of the law and it is not impossible for it to be done in
Indonesia," Antara news agency quoted bagir as saying.

The head of the Supreme Court, however, declined to explain why he agreed
with the imposition of death penalty for drugs convicts.

Several people are facing death penalty in the country over drugs-related
cases at present but they are still appealing their verdicts.
