PHILIPPINES:

Lacson not keen on supporting death penalty revival bill

Opposition Sen. Panfilo Lacson is not in keen on supporting a move by
preacher-congressman Manila Rep. Bienvenido Abante to revive the death
penalty.

Lacson said it is not good to keep changing the law as a reaction to the
peace-and-order conditions prevailing in the country.

"Dati may death penalty inalis tapos babalik na naman para tayong
nagre-react kung ano ang condition sa bansa (Before, we had the death
penalty but the government repealed it. Now we are reacting again to
prevailing peace-and-order conditions)," he said.

Last weekend, Abante sought the revival of the death penalty law after
noting a series of heinous crimes.
