There seems to be something odd somewhere indeed. Just trying to update the lowmem value for amd64 brings me from 109MiB to 164MiB, that's a big jump! I guess the kernel somehow now has a heuristic to limit the rootfs size. When using 163MiB, I hit a bug when lvm tries to start, and indeed / is said to be full while "free" shows 44MiB free.
