Hmmm, this change was needed for French translations, because
  \usepackage[frenchb]{babel}
makes some characters active (notably colon) and extra space is
automatically inserted before them. We replaced <tt> by <file> when
string contains a colon and no space (because spaces are gobbled in PDF
output by this element), and by <example compact> when they contain
colon and spaces. The latter puts string in a separate line, so it
affects rendering.

These changes do not make sense in English documents, but at least they
should help translators if they are hit by the same problem.

And please please please, do not commit other changes simultaneously, I was
going to bump version numbers and found that partitioning.sgml contains
an important change (mention of /opt). Now I must check all your changes.
Thanks.

Denis
