after modprobe sata_via I can access my sata discs both under kernel 2.4 and 
2.6.

I use software raid (mdadm) and lvm2 with no problems (device string change 
between 2.4 and 2.6 kernel, beware), I do not use hardware raid functions 
(BIOS ones), just jbod or two separate linux devices, as /dev/sd{a,b} under 
2.4 or /dev/hd{e,g} under 2.6.
