One possibility is that the code after starting the menu is not run for some reason. Did you also include the drivers needed to access the USB stick in the image? It's probably easier to mount the partition before starting the strace and writing the log directly to it. One other thing to be aware of is that the frontend will be restarted by inittab after a crash and possibly that could overwrite an earlier trace. You may want to disable that. Note that you should be able to tweak things by booting the installer with BOOT_DEBUG=3. This will give you two debug shells before init is run. Thanks for working on this! Cheers, FJP
