The file /usr/share/vim/vim62/ftplugin/java.vim has a line 'set
cindent'. This means that whenever you start editing a java file, it
sets cindent, regardless of its previous setting.
Personally, I _hate_ cindent ;-) so it quite annoys me that this is a
default setting. If the line would just be removed, people can set the
option themselves in their .vimrc

this settings looks sensible to me, since cindent is meant for all
C-like langages, java included.
*you* can set it in your vimrc as well :
au FileType java set nocindent
in your .vimrc will do the trick
