Package: lirc
Version: 0.6.6-6
Severity: important

The documentation of how to configure lirc is inconclusive. I build &
and installed the module (there is only one?). Next I ran
dpkg-reconfigure lirc
and finish with

Setting up modutils file
error reading /usr/lib/menu/abuse
############################################
## LIRC IS NOT CONFIGURED ##
## ##
## read /usr/share/doc/lirc/README.Debian ##
############################################
Starting lirc daemon:.

(I have no idea what this "error" wants to tell me, I can read that
 file fine)

Next I read "/usr/share/doc/lirc/README.Debian" as indicated by that
output.

Though not mentioned in the text, I install the kernel module
sixtyfor:/usr/src# setserial /dev/ttyS1 uart none
sixtyfor:/usr/src# modprobe lirc_serial
lirc_serial: auto-detected active high receiver

Now I am stuck. Restarting the lirc-Daemon does not help. Looking at
the init scripts I see, that the error comes from the file
/etc/lirc/lircd.conf
I again advises me to read /usr/share/doc/lirc/README.Debian, which I
did.

The only thing I did not yet touch was /etc/lirc/hardware.conf, but
once I do this, how do I update /etc/lirc/lircd.conf? Should I simply
remove the first line?

Sorry, if I missed something obvious. I just start out with lirc (e.g.,
I do not know if I answered this question about the diode vs. software
carrier correctly, but I tried both), but somehow there should be a
note how to get /etc/init.d/lirc to start correctly.

P.S. What I finally did:
*Removed this first line, a "restart" seems to suceed now. Is this
file used for any other purpose?
*Figured out what "auto-detected active high receiver" means -- that
the driver was not detected (thereby narrowing the problem down). I
double checked and realized that COM1 is my modem, so I had the wrong
      port.
I think this might be helpful, to ask the user to modprobe the
      driver manually and see if "low" or "high" receiver is reported;
maybe in the trouble shooting section?
*dpkg-reconfigure now with the "right" port and now mode2 (btw. I do
not have mode3 programm) which I found a reference in the HTML
      documentation shows input! Voila.
*Now I'll get a dedicated infrared control and learn about irrecord
