Hi!
Things happened like this: I had grub installed. I had edited it long
ago, to add a Win32 partition on (hd0,0). Then, some months later,
I updated the kernel, and trusting update-grub, I ran it.
Then I rebooted and discovered (too late) that I was left with an
unbootable system. I know I should have known better, I realized
afterwards that I hadn't set the "automagic" groot, but I really
thought that update-grub was intelligent enough to detect the way the
partitions were set...
It should, at least, check that the system is bootable, warn the user,
or something.
Love,
Margarita Manterola.

update-grub has been completely reimplemented in grub2, and this problem
does no longer apply (since it always generates grub.cfg dynamicaly, using
root device as detected by grub-probe).
Please check that everything is fine in update-grub2 wrt root drive handling,
and report bugs to that package if you find issues.
