Package: mozilla-browser
Version: 2:1.4-6
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

I'm not sure if this is a bug, or if its even a bug in mozilla, or just
something I am doing wrong. I was unable to find any documentation on
this, and I'm stumped.

Due to the huge memory footprint of gnome, I recently decided to stop
using it. I also did some tests, and found that galeon2, the
"lightweight" browser is actually slower and uses more memory than
mozilla itself while still not having the features one would expect.

Everything went fine until I started up mozilla, and was shocked by its
horrific appearance. :) I later found that if gnome-settings-daemon is
running, everything is nice and pretty as it was previously in gnome.
After some searching, I found that one can set the default GTK font in
~/.gtkrc-2.0. I will include the relevant lines here as it might help
others that are trying to accomplish the same thing:

# "Application font"
gtk-font-name = "Bitstream Vera Sans 9"

You can find a list of available fonts on your system by running
"fc-list" (part of the fontconfig package). You will also need to
delete or rename any other ~/.gtkrc* files, as they might interfere
with the above.

After the above, my menus, and user interface look about the same as
they did while running in gnome (but still 100% identical). I was happy
with the result, however, the actual web page window is still using very
small and ugly fonts. For example, I made screen shots of a web page
that uses the following style:

<style type=text/css>
BODY, TABLE {font-family: verdana,arial; font-size: 12px}
.small {font-size: 10px}
.y {color: #ffeecc; font: bold}
.title {background: #500000; font: bold}
.bluetitle {background: #000050; font: bold}
</style>

This is how it looks in gnome (with gnome-settings-daemon):
https://pyre.virge.net/mozilla-gnome.png

And without gnome:
https://pyre.virge.net/mozilla-nognome.png

Clearly the gnome version looks much better, and is much easier to read.
In fact it should be the default with or without gnome-settings-daemon.

The question really is what does gnome-settings-daemon do in order to
make fonts look so much better, and why doesn't mozilla do this by
default? If the default can't or should not be changed, then at least
some documentation on how to change it manually would be most welcome.
