I have experienced this ( http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/
bugreport.cgi?bug=583738 ) bug for a lot of months without
a solution, so I have written a simple Bash script with a
simple graphical interface using Zenity and Gxmessage to
print via lpr. You may find it interesting, I attach it here.
With Glpr you can specify some printing parameters and
print via lpr as OpenOffice do without problems.

If you want to package this, feel free to open an ITP bug, or if you want it to
be packaged by somebody else, you can open an RFP bug, see www.debian.org/wnpp
