This is a known upstream bug and was marked as a duplicate,

my upstream report (submitted by bugbuddy; I have gnome-dbg installed) is

but I didn't find the upstream bug report helpful.

This bug has been marked as fixed upstream and I can't reproduce it
either with evince 3.4.0, i.e. it opens and displays refcards.ps.gz just
fine.
So I'm going to close this bug report.
If you still experience the bug report with the current version from
sid/evince, please re-open this bug report of file a new one.
