Package: vorbis-tools
Version: 1.0.1-1
Severity: normal
I generally report manpage bugs with "minor" severity, but this
particular error makes it very difficult for a user to get ogg123 to
output via alsa09 (which is now the default (only?) alsa).
The devices section should probably list alsa and alsa09 separately
(currently alsa09 is not mentioned) and explicitly indicate that alsa is
for the old 0.5.x alsa drivers. One or both of them should give hints
to the reader, something like (alsa) "You probably want the newer alsa09
output device instead" and/or (alsa09) "This is probaably the
output device you want to use on a system with a recent ALSA."
I only found out about the alsa09 device by looking at the libao.conf
man page, but I think the average user will never figure this out,
especially by ogg123's error message:
=== No such device alsa.
Maybe that error message should look like this instead:
=== No such device alsa. (Perhaps you really want alsa09 instead?)

* Modified alsa to mention alsa09 (although the device might be nowadays
alsa, back, since alsa1.0 has been already released). (Closes: #258286)
* Modified the manpage/help message for vorbiscomment to make it a bit more
userfiendly: Closes: #252531.

searches: Closes: #274894.
* Typos in manpages: Closes: #302150.
* Escaped dashes in manpage: Closes: #264365.
* Quiet option is actually with -Q, not -q (Closes: #211289) Reported
