Package: pbuilder
Version: 0.215+nmu3
Severity: normal
Dear maintainer,
currently pbuilder use hardlinks to use the apt cache inside the pbuilder
chroots.
This is not possibile if you keep /var/cache/pbuilder in a different device than
the one you keep your apt cache (a sane example: you can keep
/var/cache/pbuilder in tmpfs to speed up things). In this case you have to use
APTCACHEHARDLINK=no, and pbuilder fall backs to normal cp. a full copy of the
entire apt cache, which is something slow if you have a big (huge) cache, other
than a waste of space.
I didn't get why you use hard links instead of symlinks, so I'm asking you
either to explain the choice or to move to symlink.
Thanks for pbuilder.

Symbolic links are not visible from within the chroot.
Make sure your /var/cache/pbuilder is all on one filesystem only.
It works that way. cowbuilder, too.
