Recently, after some upgrade I guess, KDM stopped working and displayed the
following message instead: cannot open theme file
@@@ToBeReplacedByDesktopBase@@@.
A quick fix is to set UseTheme=false in /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc
Also the Login Manager configuration tool in System Settings does not let me
configure anything at all: everything is grayed out.

kdm was last released with Debian 8 (jessie) in April 2015
and was removed from the Debian archive afterwards.
It has been superseded by sddm.
