Thanks to a bit of digging around on the web, I found out that I could fix this problem by adding the following option to /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc: TerminateServer=true I'm not sure if the best way to fix this is to make this the default, or to somehow prevent the X server from terminating when the user logs out, but in any case this is a problem with the default settings that should be fixed.
