FWIW, rdesktop/freerdp and some VNC clients does exactly the same:
while the host mouse is on top of their window, all keyboard events
goes to that window, including stuff like Alt+Tab etc; when mouse
leaves their window, all "special" keyboard events goes to host
instead, and only regular keys (letters/numbers/etc) goes to the
remote.
