There is an upstream bug (actually dozens) but they are just closed as being "NOTGNOME" (read: "Gnome doesn't bother to fix this"). They basically claim that you need a mime-type for .pdf.gz and then it should mysteriously work. There used to be a mime type editor in gnome I think (where you could define which applications to use for which file types) but I can't find it any more... http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=307087 I think you can do some undocumented magic in ~/.local/share/mime... but that didn't help (create .local/share/mime/packages/Override.xml with the contents <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <mime-info xmlns="http://www.freedesktop.org/standards/shared-mime-info";> <mime-type type="application/pdf"><comment>PDF Dokument</comment><glob pattern="*.pdf.gz"/><glob pattern="*.pdf.bz2"/></mime-type> </mime-info> and then evince will no longer claim to be not responsible, but just complain about it not being a PDF file...)
