Hello Steve. I have just uploaded gettext_0.18.1.1-6 for unstable using (most) of your patch. Thanks a lot!
While looking at the patch I noticed a few missing things that you might want to fix in Ubuntu: - There were no Section and Priority for libgettextpo0. As a result, this library seems to be in section "devel" in Ubuntu 12.04. - There was not a call to dpkg-shlibdeps in libgettextpo0. As a result, libgettextpo0 has a lot of unwanted dependencies, as it seems to reuse the shlibs:Depends variable from gettext binary package. There are also some things for which I'm unsure: - As we are both moving libgettextpo0 to another package and moving to multiarch, "libgettextpo0" does not really share any files with "gettext", so the "Replaces" was not strictly necessary, but I can think about some scenarios where it could still be useful (for example, compatibility with a backport to squeeze which does not do multiarch yet), and that's why I've decided to keep it. - It is not clear to me where static .a libraries should go in multiarch. I've done what the patch did, which is to keep them in /usr/lib in gettext (which is a -dev package) as I understand that the priority here was to switch library packages.
