I have purged tetex-{base,bin,extra} again and manually removed /usr/share/texmf and /etc/texmf/. Apologies for overlooking them so far. After reinstalling tetex-{base,bin} the spurious /usr/share/texmf/web2c/updmap.cfg file did _not_ reappear. Next I installed tetex-extra which as usual reproduced the deficient /var/lib/texmf/dvips/config/psfonts_t1.map file. The following updmap.* files are now present: /var/lib/texmf/web2c/updmap.cfg /usr/share/man/man1/updmap.1.gz /usr/share/tetex-base/updmap.cfg Ciao, Arne
