The latest gdm3 uploads promoted metacity from a suggests to a depends. This pulls in many additional libraries (such as webkit), which aren't really useful when gdm3 is only used as a simple login manager. By default recommends are installed, so I think that would be a better place for this; since it makes it possible for users to be selective.
