Yeah, this should be ready and will be part of the next upload.

Very nice! Thanks a bunch. I merged this (with a tiny tweak) and it
will be part of the next upload.

If you want/have time I would be keen to get feedback on the current
version in trunk (bzr get lp:unattended-upgrades). It sports python3
compatibility (i.e. it can run under both py2 and py3). But that
required some churn in the code so a bit of addtitional real-world
testing would be great :)
